What we do

Creative programmes with real-world purpose

We design and deliver creative media, enrichment and mentoring programmes for young people and communities. Our work gives participants space to build confidence, develop practical skills, tell their own stories and see themselves differently.

Why Photo 51?

Named after an overlooked image that changed history

Photo 51 was the image that helped reveal the structure of DNA. The discovery changed science, but the woman behind the image, Rosalind Franklin, was overlooked for her contribution.

We chose the name because it reflects our mission. We work with people, stories and communities that are too often underestimated, underfunded or written out of the frame.

Photo 51 CIC exists to make the overlooked visible.

What our founders have built before Photo 51

Photo 51 CIC is a young organisation led by people who are not new to this work. This is our founders’ track record, credited to the person who delivered it.

  • Youth enrichment in Tower Hamlets

Mock Court Trials, Dragons’ Den pitch challenges, financial literacy and confidence building, designed and led for sixth form and Year 8 students. The first Mock Trial drew 25 young people to a session planned for 15.

  • Studio work

A disused youth music studio rebuilt and brought back into use. A young carer’s music made there earned a Tower Hamlets Youth Awards nomination and a festival slot in Victoria Park. Alongside that, music production taught at Urban Music Foundation, including AQA and Arts Award accredited programmes.

  • Womanhood Academy and StreetMothers

Supplementary education dedicated to Black girls, and grassroots, care-led support for families and young people navigating complex circumstances.

  • Performing arts and media

Founded and ran Reality Bytes CIC for fourteen years, taking performing arts into schools, pupil referral units, colleges and prisons. On-camera interviews with actors Kingsley Ben-Adir and Lashana Lynch for BMT Stories.

  • Youth mentoring and community sport

Eight years as a youth mentor with South Kilburn Community Trust, running football, futsal, fitness and trips for young people on some of London’s most deprived estates, and coaching young people in the community since 2004. Recognised with a Give Back Award from the Mayor of Brent in 2017.

  • University digital learning

Learning technologist in higher education: producing and recording video for teaching, running the online learning platform and training lecturers to use digital tools.
